Proper prep is key to getting the best results from your sugaring session! Here’s what to avoid before your appointment:
Avoid Tanning & Sun Exposure
Tanning—whether from the sun or a tanning bed—can make your skin more sensitive, irritated, and prone to damage. Since sugaring is a gentle form of hair removal that lightly exfoliates the skin, tanning beforehand can increase the risk of redness, discomfort, and even lifting of the skin. To be safe, avoid sun exposure for at least 24 hours before and after your appointment.
Skip the Caffeine
That morning coffee might be part of your routine, but did you know caffeine can heighten your skin’s sensitivity to pain? Caffeine stimulates your nervous system, which can make your sugaring session feel more intense than it needs to. To minimize discomfort, it’s best to avoid caffeine for up to 24 hours before your appointment. If you’re sensitive to pain, this small change can make a big difference!
Stop Using Retinoids & Harsh Exfoliants
Retinoids and exfoliating acids thin the skin and speed up cell turnover. While great for skincare, these products can make your skin too delicate for sugaring, increasing the risk of irritation, redness, or even skin lifting. To be safe, stop using retinoids at least a week before your appointment. If you’re unsure, check with your esthetician!
No Trimming, Plucking, or Shaving
Sugaring requires a certain hair length (about the size of a grain of rice or 1/4 inch) for the paste to grip and remove the hair properly. Trimming, plucking, or shaving beforehand can make the process less effective—which means you may not get the smooth results you’re looking for! Let your Sugarista handle it and come as you are for the best sugaring experience.
Bonus Tip: Hydrated skin = better results! Drink plenty of water before your appointment to keep your skin healthy and less prone to irritation.
